Once visit this Amalfi Coast gem, believe me, you won’t want to leave! Venture into this lemon-flavoured dream place on the shores of crystal-clear turquoise water. If you like to visit the best beaches in Italy, then it’s best to start searching for where to stay in Positano.
The legend says that Poseidon made this place personally and dedicated it to the nymph Pasithea. Although this place has no airport and is a bit tricky to get to, every kilometre travelled will be worth it. Best to get there by boat, FCO train, or SITA bus only 1.5 from Napoli for 30-40 euros.

But, first things first:
Here is the question: Where to stay in Positano for a first-time visit?
The answer is simple: Chiesa Nuova Area
This place will make you love Positano even more. I definitely recommend this picturesque former fishing village, which, over time, has grown into one of the most visited Italian destinations with the most colourful, vibrant homes.
Which places to visit?
- Santa Maria Assunta Church
- Spiaggia Grande (Main Beach)
- Fornillo Beach
- Shopping and Dining
Why do we recommend these areas?
Santa Maria Assunta Church is one of the most prominent landmarks of Positano and dates back to the 10th century. It was built in Byzantine and is known for its Madonna and Child artwork.
Spaggia Grande is the most photogenic spot in all of Positano and is even better known as Positano Beach. It offers unforgettable iconic views and all-day entertainment at the beach bars.
If you want a slightly calmer vibe, go to Fornillo Beach, the second most famous beach, from where you have the most accessible port for sailing to Capri and other surrounding towns.
While thinking about where to stay in Positano, don’t forget that you also need to consider the best places to indulge in Italian food and aperitif hours.
Here’s a full map for you to understand the different areas.

1.1 Families
Be prepared for many stairs and hilly regions, so think about whether this will be challenging for your children. How do you solve that? Book a hotel by the beach or allow them small sweet treats that will give them the energy to run up all the stairs. For example, buy them lemon-flavoured candy, caprese panini deli meatballs or the most delicious wood oven pizza at Bar Buca Di Bacco. In the evening, go for cocktails. Don’t worry; there is also a kid-friendly non-alcoholic variety, and I recommend the traditional Positano Tropicana.
And now, let’s answer where to stay in Positano.
Fornillo Beach Area
As I mentioned, this is the second most popular place serving scenic views. It is an ideal place for an afternoon of family enjoyment. The peace you get is priceless. If your hotel is a little further away, be prepared for about 15 minutes of climbing stairs to reach the place.
Spiaggia Grande Area
If you are a more dynamic family that likes bout tours, daytime bar entertainment, and beach company, settle near the main beach. There are always exciting activities here you can all enjoy.
Handpicked accommodations for families
Hotel Pupetto, Fornillo Beach Area
In Hotel Pupetto, you have family rooms that can host 2+2 guests. Each room has a balcony with a superb view and an even more superb breakfast. The location is 7 minutes from the sea, and you can even book a shuttle to the airport.
Villa Dani, Spiaggia Grande Area
Villa Dani is close to the beach and shopping locations. What makes it one of the best places to stay in Positano is the fact you have an entire home at your disposal. The property offers 2 comfortable bedrooms, a living room, 2 bathrooms, a walk-in shower, and private parking for guests.
1.2 Couples
Positano hides the most romantic views from the restaurant terraces. It gets dark earlier here, so you can catch the sunset around 6 pm during an aperitif on one of the beautiful terraces with a view. Visit Da Vincenzo and Viale Pasitea for an unforgettable romantic experience.
Spiaggia Grande Area
Here is the epicentre of the happenings and the best view of dreamy, colourful houses next to blue turquoise water. Enjoy candlelight evenings on the beach and take a great picture at one of the many Instagrammable spots.
Chiesa Nuova Area
While walking here, you will come across many street painters who you cannot ask to paint you a picture of the two of you. Let this be a souvenir of your romantic trip or honeymoon here. End the evening with a Kayak sunset tour.
Handpicked accommodations for couples

Hotel Poseidon also has an in-house speciality restaurant and an excellent bar with a terrace specialising in Aperitivo. You won’t regret booking a stay at Hotel Poseidon.
1.3 Luxury traveler
If you are looking for luxury in Positano, lavish hotels are everywhere, especially by the water. One night in these hotels costs 1200 euros, on average. Apart from upscale restaurants, there are also excellent beach bars and private boat tours reserved for select guests.
If you want a recommendation for exceptional fine dining, make a reservation at the Michelin-starred Da Vincenzo or at Franco’s Bar, an annexe of the opulent hotel Le Sirenuse.
Spiaggia Grande Area
If you choose this as your answer to where to stay in Positano, you’ll get an exclusive atmosphere and incredible panoramic views- not to mention private tours and luxurious hotel treatment. This place is reserved for luxury travellers looking for seclusion and tranquillity, so don’t miss out on it!
Fornillo Beach Area
The area also features refined beach clubs with a relaxed atmosphere and top service. Many of the hotels here offer relaxation in rich wellness centres.
Handpicked accommodations for the luxury traveler
Le Sirenuse, Spiaggia Grande Area
This is precisely the hotel you saw in the pictures of Positano on Instagram or Pinterest. It belongs to one of the best honeymoon hotels in Positano. The rooms at Le Sirenuse are designed for two people, and you can use the long pool with vine landscaping, spa and impeccable dining.
The hotel is very well situated, 200 metres from the beach and with private parking. One of the greatest treasures of the hotel is the kind staff who will make your stay flawless.
Villa Magia, Fornillo Beach Area
Villa Magia offers an impressive terrace view and a gorgeous pool overlooking the town. In the complex, you have 2 outdoor swimming pools, wellness with Hamam and an excellent restaurant where fancy breakfast is served. At your request, they can also organise an airport shuttle.
1.4 Design-lovers
If you’ve heard that Positano is the most photogenic spot on the Amalfi Coast, let me assure you that, yes, those claims are true. Feel the Positano Vintage Dream at the most photogenic place on the Amalfi Coast. Rent an old-timer and take an unforgettable tour through Positano.
Explore the local souvenir shops, and notice how almost everything is in the form of lemons. How does a beautiful summer dress with a lemon pattern sound to you? That’s enough of a sign that you’ve been to Positano. Another exciting experience is buying handmade sandals that skilled artisans make in front of you in just 20 minutes. Speaking of art shops, visit Antica Sartoria, a bohemian pop shop I’m sure you’ll love.
Chiesa Nuova Area
Looking for where to stay in Positano? The centre offers beautiful views, where you can marvel at the famous architecture of the cathedral. You can also find exciting designer and craft shops along the streets.
Spiaggia Grande Area
Here are the best hotels that captivate with every detail. Those travellers looking for creativity will get coastal design inspiration here. A few more artistic elements will leave you speechless, from street art and famous boutique shops to handmade crafts. Here, there is traditional craftsmanship of ceramics and handmade fashion details that I’m sure you’ll enjoy taking a peak at.
Handpicked accommodations for the design lover
Hotel Villa Franca, Chiesa Nuova Area
Being one of the best hotels in Positano, this luxury accommodation seamlessly combines contemporary art with conventional cave-style Positano architecture. All rooms have traditional Positano terraces, and the facade is made of white walls with navy blue decor ornament. Hotel Villa Franca has an extended pool open to guests.
Villa dei Fisici Positano, Spiaggia Grande Area
Villa dei Fisici Positano has an interesting exterior and interior and a spacious pool. The terraces and balconies offer a city view and garden view. The whole complex has 7 bedrooms and can accommodate 19 people. It is located 1.5 km from the first beach and a 15-minute drive to Amalfi.
1.5 Groups
Have you already organised the group aperitif hour or group boat tour? If you left this for another day, then why not spend an entire day enjoying the beach? In addition, you can organise a day trip to Sorrento, Capri, or other parts of the Amalfi Coast.
If you are more physically fit, keep the hiking path of Gods in mind or simply book cooking classes and learn more about the tricks of Italian cuisine. Drink the aperitif at Franco’s Bar.
Montepertuso Area
The literal translation of the name of this place is “hole in the mountain,” which describes the setting and the typical Arch. Santa Maria Delle Grazie Church is attractive to see here. This picturesque village has a traditional, authentic Italian energy and hides many cosy restaurants with excellent food. I tried the best dishes here during my entire stay.
Chiesa Nuova Area
Book a sunset cruise or spend some time shopping in the local shops. You can also take a good group picture here, enjoying everything that makes this one of the best places to stay in Positano.
Handpicked accommodations for groups
Casa Malu, Montepertuso Area
Casa Malu enjoys an excellent location and offers an even better welcome from the helpful hostess and the rest of the staff. It’s located in central downtown but still in a tranquil environment. The rooms are spacious and have good facilities, daily housekeeping and private parking for all guests.
Cottage L’Americano, Chiesa Nuova Area
This place will give you the vibe of making you feel at home. The host provides excellent visitor tips, which makes this place an excellent choice for where to stay in Positano. Cottage L’Americano is available for 3 people and it has one bedroom. Additional options include breakfast and private parking.
1.6 Solo-travelers
If you’re planning to explore Positano on your own, you must prepare excellent, comfortable walking shoes. When you require a break, go to one of the local restaurants to try mouth-watering seafood pasta. But prepare cash because some of the restaurants do not accept cards.
Once you explore Positano, it is time for a day trip to Capri. For those who like challenges, I will mention the Path of the Gods again, with beautiful views along the way and a length of 7.8 kilometres.
Spiaggia Grande Area
This part of the city provides nature walks, sunsets, group beach parties, and also peaceful nights to recharge your batteries. Although there are not many hostels here, you can find a suitable room to stay in some of the best hotels in Positano.
Chiesa Nuova Area
Fortunately, you won’t have to walk many stairs here, because you are not lodged right by the sea. Instead, you will be walking near the cathedral, and through the alleys, where you can find cosy little restaurants suitable for everyone’s wallet.
Handpicked accommodations for a solo traveler
Palazzo Talamo, Spiaggia Grande Area
Palazzo Talamo is situated in a historical building dating from the 19th century. This place will offer you a stay, just like in the rich Italian movies. The advantage of this place is that it is located next to the port and has a sea-view balcony. It has a lovely staff that is here to help you if you need to organise an airport shuttle.
Hotel Il Gabbiano, Chiesa Nuova Area
Hotel Il Gabbiano is a family-run hotel with a soul and panoramic sea view. It offers a marvellous stay in simply decorated rooms. There is also private parking, and the location is a 15-minute walk from the centre.
1.7 Nightlife Traveler
Still haven’t decided where to stay in Positano? If you are looking for a party, you’ve come to the right place! Here, you have everything; from classic nightclubs to beach bars from which music does not stop blaring.
Spiaggia Grande Area
Even if you only have 24 hours in Positano, you must taste the nightlife. Visit Next2 Club with live performances and the most popular The Music on the Rock, a beach bar with a DJ and a dancing club.
It is embedded in a rock and looks towards the sea; you can see the city in lights at night. This place is the top 1 for partying in Positano. I recommend Chez Black Lounge on the coast if you want a more relaxed option.
Chiesa Nuova Area
This is the place where you’ll find the ordinarily indisputable Buca di Bacco and Franco’s for the best aperitivo experience. You can also go to Bar Internacional, the central meeting point for all the locals.
Handpicked accommodations for nightlife
Hotel Casa Albertina, Spiaggia Grande Area
This is one of the best hotels in Positano if you’re looking for something between luxury and budget-friendly. Hotel Casa Albertina offers a homey environment with delicious vintage Italian cuisine and sumptuous linens. Fabulous breakfast is served on the terrace daily, and one night costs 100 euros.
Hotel Villa Delle Palme in Positano, Chiesa Nuova Area
Hotel Villa Delle Palme is a clean, warm, welcoming place, only a 15-minute walk from the Cathedral and nightclubs. The staff here is simply lovely. There are also 2 restaurants nearby that are owned by the same owners and can be used by hotel guests. All rooms have a private bath, which adds to the convenience.
1.8 For the Budget Traveler
Most of the beaches are private, but I still selected a few places for you where you can enjoy the beach for free. These are the beaches next to the Marina, and those paid beaches require 20-30 euros for a sunbed in the third row.
It’s no secret that Positano is a more expensive place to vacation, but you can find accommodation for 100 euros a night. If you want to go to other places, the most budget-friendly option is the ferry.
Montepertuso
Wondering where to stay in Positano on a budget? This charming village offers a local experience and budget-friendly accommodation near Positano. Public transport will take you to the beach, and the main beach is 2 hours away. Here, you will enjoy excellent food and a reclassifying pace.
Arienzo Beach Area
Here’s another place away from the crown. Although there are luxurious beach bars here, there is also a beach where you can sunbathe for free; and it’s around 6-7 km from Positano.
Handpicked accommodations for budget traveler
Casa Scirocco, Montepertuso
Casa Scirocco is a luxury-on-a-budget win for you: a complete home accommodating up to 6 guests. An overnight stay is around 60 euros per person, and there is also a minimarket with affordable prices in the complex. The host can arrange an airport shuttle for you for a minimal fee. You receive complimentary wine, champagne and chocolate cakes at the reception.
