But, first things first:
Here is the question: Where to stay in Amalfi for a first-time visit?
The answer is simple: Positano
Named the best place to visit on the Amalfi Coast, Positano is centrally located and offers something for everyone’s taste. When you first visit it, you will feel like you are in a fairy tale, and the small, narrow streets full of flowers will contribute to this feeling. Positano features the most famous beaches, seaside cafes or nightclubs, and a boutique-lined street for shopping lovers. The city is so easy to get to, and you are a few steps away from all the local attractions:
- Spiaggia Grande – the most beautiful beach located centrally in Positano, with moments of relaxation after or before a long exploration of the rest of the beauties of the coast.
- Grotta dello Smeraldo – a natural wonder, a cave that hides green-turquoise sea water and a breathtaking atmosphere.
- Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta – the most beautiful church in this part of Italy, with Byzantine features. Don’t miss to find out why it has this name.
Why do we recommend these areas?
If you chose this location because of the beaches, you are definitely not wrong. Spiaggia Grande will pamper all your senses with the azure water and peaceful ambience.
On the coastline, you have beautiful cafes and restaurants where you can enjoy the Italian cuisine flavours in your chosen company.
When thinking about where to stay on the Amalfi Coast, specifically Positano, aim for a central location – after you explore Piazza dei Mulini, you will be in Spiaggia Grande in 5 minutes. Also, because you’re planning a week-long trip, don’t miss a day trip to Emerald Cave or Grotta dello Smeraldo.
And finally, while walking through Positano, glance at the most beautiful church, Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta, bursting with history since the 10th century. Go inside and see the symbol of the Virgin Mary arriving in this beautiful Amalfi Coast city.
Here’s a full map for you to understand the different areas.
Please note: those might not be the exact names of the districts, neither its absolute borders. I just tried to simplify this information.

1. Best areas and handpicked hotels for Amalfi Coast
The fact that all these locations аnd nightlife spots are close to you does not affect the tranquillity of the night that Positano delivers. In other words, your sleep will go uninterrupted! Additionally, Positano also offers accommodation for everyone’s pocket, from small rooms to luxury apartments with sea views.
The prices for overnight stays are high, so I have prepared more options for you in the text below. Private accommodations can be found for prices lower than 200 euros per night, while in hotels, a night ranges from 50-100 euros.
Whichever option you choose, you will be amazed by your surroundings. Lower Positano is where the beaches and all the local attractions are, so it is often crowded. However, I still recommend finding accommodation there, because the best selection of hotels and accommodations is concentrated in this part. Also, the ferry port is close, and you can quickly go on a day trip. For those who find walking and climbing stairs a problem, remember that Positano is hilly. Still, Lower Positano is much easier to navigate, so if you are going with a family or elderly people, definitely choose this area.
Finally, let’s look into where to stay on the Amalfi Coast! Whether travelling alone, with your partner or family, I have a ready solution for you.

Handpicked accommodations for families
The entire Amalfi Coast is well-suited for your family trip. This place will definitely remain in the memory of your children, especially if you want to enjoy water sports, hiking, and boat tours together or spend the whole day lying on the beach or in a wide-awake expedition gathering new knowledge about the architecture and history of the cities. There are even specialized tours for curious children about history and architecture. Also, all Amalfi Coast cities are quite safe, so you needn’t worry about a thing!
Another advantage is that you can reach the Amalfi Coast by car. These scenic drives from one place to another will never disappear from your memory. Above, we saw Positano as one of the most crowded places, which may not be ideal for a quiet family vacation. Just for that reason, try to find accommodation in one of the following locations:
Minori
- Small and tranquil;
- Intimate beaches;
- Accessible apartments for families;
Amalfi
- Frequently visited;
- Has fewer stairs than the central area, making it easier for you to get around with children.
Hotel Palazzo Murat
The first thing you will notice about this Amalfi Coast hotel is the spacious rooms, especially the ones meant for families. The whole family will enjoy a superb breakfast included in the price, with many choices of homemade pastries for your little ones.
You can spend your free time in the outdoor pool or go on a boat tour organized by Hotel Palazzo Murat. If you are coming by plane, don’t worry, you won’t have any additional troubles. The hotel provides transportation from and to the airport, and it also offers babysitting or child services for an additional fee.
Hotel Santa Caterina
Built into a rock, this Hotel Santa Caterina combines luxury and natural beauty. The hotel has a private beach and the possibility of daily entertainment activities, but also an evening program, especially for children and adults.
