(This guide is always up to date, the last updated February 2025.)
But, first things first:
Here is the question: Where to stay in Biarritz for a first-time visit?
The answer is simple: City Center (around Place Clemenceau)
In order not to rush and be able to adapt as the locals take things slow, settle in the city centre. The good news is that this part is quite close to the airport, i.e. a 5 km drive and the transportation costs only 2 euros. Besides having all the attractions in the palm of your hand, the centre is a good starting point for a half-day trip to Gethary or St. Jean de Luz or a day trip to San Sebastian.
Which attractions do I recommend?
Some of these areas include:
- Place Clemenceau:
- Casino Barrière de Biarritz
- Biarritz City Hall (Hôtel de Ville)
- Galerie d’Art La Côte Basque
Why do we recommend these areas?
Place Clemenceau is the most prominent shopping spot where you will find Basque clothes to echolocate. Casino Barriere de Biarritz, built in Art Deco style, was opened in Biarritz in 1901. This casino is still open and is one of Biarritz’s most popular attractions. Hotel de Ville, or Biarritz City Hall, is located in the heart of the city and is one of the citizen spots to visit. And finally Galleria d’Arte LA Cote Basque. This gallery is more than an everyday place for exhibitions or museums; it hosts major events and music concerts.
So, where to stay in Biarritz depending on the type of traveller you are?
Here’s a full map for you to understand the different areas.
Please note: those might not be the exact names of the districts, neither its absolute borders. I just tried to simplify this information.

Did you know that Biarritz is the birthplace of surfing? That’s why it’s better known as the French California. The entire Cote des Basque region is ideal for beginners to relax and indulge in the magic of surfing. Apart from this, in Biarritz, I assure you that you will try a lot of tasty food and specialities. And if you are a sweets lover, don’t miss the delightful taste of Basque Cake, which comes in 2 flavours, cream and black cherry. Your kids will love them.
And now, let’s check the best places to stay in Biarritz;
Côte des Basques
This is the most spectacular viewpoint over the bay; you can see it from the many villas designed for families. There is a lifeguard on the beaches every day from May to October, so you can enjoy sunbathing while your children swim or surf. Some previous visitors describe this place as a Malibu layback surf vibe spot.
Milady
This quarter is located north of the centre, recognisable for its golden sand, exciting beach volleyball, and children’s playgrounds. The whole part is easily accessible by car, and you can also use wheelbarrows or simply walk. Everything is within your reach. One of the famous attractions in Biarritz, Biarritz Lighthouse, is within walking distance.
Handpicked accommodations for families
Little Bibi Terrace – Côte des basques and private garage, Cote des Basques
Searching for where to stay in Biarritz, this spacious, Little Bibi Terrace is a great choice! It’s close to the beach and several family-friendly restaurants. It has 2 bedrooms with an additional sofa in the living room and 2 bathrooms. It can host 5 guests.
There is free parking and a large yard for children’s games. The reception is available 24 hours a day. Plade Marbella is just 1.1 km away.
Résidence Prestige Odalys Les Villas Milady, Milady
Résidence Prestige Odalys Les Villas Milady is a villa-size accommodation with an outdoor pool and terrace, where you also have free parking. Just 70 m from the Cite de l’Ocean or 4 km from the airport, this villa offers you a proper family holiday the French way. You have family rooms, and as your choice, I am refurbishing the two-bedroom villa for 6 guests or the superior villa for 12 guests.
1.2 Couples
If I have to single out one place in Biarritz that is the most romantic, then it is la Plage Ilbarritz and the beautiful sunset. And I must not forget to mention le Phare de Biarritz, a renovated lighthouse that offers a 360-degree view of all of Biarritz.
Grand Plage
Without any doubt, I recommend Grand Plage as the best place you can choose to stay in Biarritz because it’s spacious and iconic. Enjoy your morning coffee and French croissant to the maximum on your balcony or at one of the cafes overlooking the waves. In addition to an excellent beach, here are the best honeymoon hotels in Biarritz.
Port Vieux
Although a smaller place, it will win you over with its intimate vibe and romantic thread. You can simply lay in the shadow of the Neo-Medieval Villa Beleza and then go up and enjoy the view from the viewpoint. Although it used to be open to the public, this villa has become a luxury hotel, the ideal source for your romantic getaway in Biarritz. If you want a good drink and quality service nearby, I recommend the renowned Eden Rock Cafe.
Handpicked accommodations for couples
Studio Front de mer Biarritz – Spa & Thalasso, Grand Plage
Searching for “Biarritz where to stay?” Studio Front de mer Biarritz offers a comfortable apartment with a sea view and an outdoor pool. These are actually one-bedroom apartments with one bath, and the complex also has a spa and fitness centre. It is only 90 meters from Plage Miramar.
Hôtel de La Plage, Port Vieux
This is a family-run hotel near the beach, famous for its friendly staff. Hôtel de La Plage faces the ocean and is located 50 meters from Plage de Vieux Port. It offers a buffet breakfast, and you can find even more in restaurants only 150 meters away. The city centre is a 5-minute drive away.
1.3 Luxury traveler
Still haven’t decided on where to stay in Biarritz? As I already mentioned, this has always been one of the favourite destinations of the French rich. Believe it or not, Biarritz was the favourite place of Napoleon III and his day Empress Eugenie II. It used to be a place for royalty to escape, and now it is a world-famous surfing spot with preserved opulence. There are too many golf courses and a fantastic food scene.
La Grande Plage
La Grange Plage perfectly combines luxury with a laid-back atmosphere. You have a spacious beach to hang out at, and a private beach and plenty of other lavish features are sure to await you at your luxury hotel.
Le Phare
The most famous attraction of Biarritz is Biarritz Lighthouse, a neoclassical structure and historical city symbol. Built in 1834, it still stands here but is now fully automated making it a top tourist attraction. It is one of France’s tallest Lighthouses and a prominent feature of the Biarritz skyline. The area around the lighthouse offers interesting hotels known for their luxury and many fine-dining restaurants.
Handpicked accommodations for the luxury traveler
Hôtel du Palais Biarritz, in The Unbound Collection by Hyatt, La Grand Plage
Hôtel du Palais Biarritz is one of the best places to stay in Biarritz and for more than one good reason. There is a beautiful garden, and the rooms have a great city view. Moreover, there are 4 outdoor pools and one indoor pool.
All 5 stars are justified because 4 restaurants and a spa and fitness centre have been added. I recommend trying their deep tissue massages and enjoying the hot tub. And for your children, there is a large children’s playground.
Regina Experimental Biarritz, Le Phare
Regina Experimental Biarritz is a luxury hotel with a unique corridor in the atrium with brand-new decor. I was surprised by the interior design and Neo-Basque architecture. All rooms shine in a shade of Basque red.
1.4 Design-lovers
If design is your forte when searching for where to stay in Basque, the houses from the beginning of the 19th century and their unique architecture will first catch your eye. And if you want to buy a piece of branded clothing or a unique Basque fabric, head to Rue Gambetta, the most well-stocked shopping street.
I also have a hidden gem for you that just blew my mind. Bookstore Biarritz, just a few steps from Grande Plage, is located on 2 floors and is my personal favourite design Biarritz attraction.
City Center (around Place Clemenceau)
Although Biarritz is known as a city with more days of rainfall than London, paradoxically, it also has more sunlight per month. And where is the best place to feel the sun, if not through the central streets that lead to the most beautiful beaches?
Besides, you will come across murals and charming designer shops; somewhere around the corner, look for Le Ble noir Creperie and enjoy the most beautiful crepes.
Le Phare
For your stay in Biarritz, I also recommend you consider the symbol of neoclassicism, which can serve as your inspiration for the most beautiful paintings or great photography. Here, you can enjoy the perfect ocean and city combination.
The quarter is 15 minutes from the centre and will win you over with its calm pace and compact guesthouses.

Wondering where to stay in Biarritz as a group? I have great news for you; there’s no way you will not get bored here! After exploring the city, you can go on a day trip to Bayonee, Guethary, or Spain. But first, let’s see what to do in Biarritz if you are on a group trip.
You will go to whichever beach you choose, but I must point out one exciting place. I’m referring to Deus ex Machina, a unique concept of a restaurant and shop with a light, nutritious kitchen. The shop has surfing accessories and books featuring local artists.
City Center (around Place Clemenceau)
Find accommodation in the city centre so that everything is within reach. Visit the main attractions and take a lunch break at Le’ Entre Deux, but book in advance. I personally liked the fish dishes the most. Speaking of a place to stay in Biarritz, note that most apartments for groups are located right in the centre.
Grand Plage
One thing visitors first notice when visiting Biarritz is the Grand Plage itself and the excellent tapas bars. And your ideal accommodation is hidden somewhere in the streets. For the same, research on AirBnB or Booking. Use the group accommodation filter.

1.6 Solo-travelers
Believe it or not, Biarritz is a solo traveller’s dream. You have friendly locals, beautiful beaches and exciting tourist attractions. Accommodation for solo travellers is available in hostels, hotels and Airbnb properties. One interesting solo travellers spot is Les Halles de Biarritz, a local market open every morning. It will win you over with its colourfulness and noisy atmosphere. Grab a coffee at Lobita Coffee Corner inside the market. If you are looking for a great food corner for solo travellers, I recommend Alles Port des Pechuens.

You also have a lot of social opportunities here, so don’t hesitate to use them because you may only be in Biarritz once. The city centre offers flexibility and the chance to explore the city at your own pace.
Grand Plage
Beach lovers often flock here, so don’t think twice. Head straight to the postcard-worthy Grand Plage and the recognizable striped sun tent, which cost 15 euros for the whole day, and you can also pay extra for sun chairs. The best thing about the neighbourhood is that your accommodation will be close to the beach.

1.7 Nightlife Traveler
As we slowly move towards the end, I’m here to answer where to stay in Biarritz for those looking to experience the city’s night scene! I’m sure you’ll like everything, but I’ll single out Bar de la Plage, a hotspot of the town. It is located on the ground floor of Biarritz Casino, and across the street is one of the best discos in Biarritz.
City Center (around Place Clemenceau)
The centre offers various ranges of venues. So let’s see a few :
- La Caveau which promises an unforgettable night out in Biarritz
- L’Atabal, music concert venue
- La Plancha, beachfront night bar.
Port Vieux
And what does Port Vieux offer? This horseshoe-shaped plage hides the most visited bar in Biarritz, and that is Eden Rock Cafe, located along the rock and also known as the perfect spot for aperitif.
Handpicked accommodations for nightlife
Coup De Coeur – T3 Au Coeur De Biarritz, City Center
Excellent place to stay in Biarritz- right in the city’s centre, with a glazed dining area and a very bright space. Coup De Coeur – T3 Au Coeur De Biarritz has a private kitchen and bathroom, can accommodate 7 guests in 2 bedrooms, and has a sofa in the living room. It is 200 m from Grande Plage.
Hôtel Palmito, Port Vieux
Hôtel Palmito is known for its clean rooms and responsive staff. It is decorated nicely and is 100 metres from the beach. Some rooms feature a balcony. It has a private bathroom, and I recommend the apartment for 5 people. If you want to share a room, you can choose dormitory rooms with 2-6 beds.
1.8 For the Budget Traveler
How to make a budget-friendly vacation in Biarritz? Here are some tips and information for you. According to my analysis, you can find accommodation on Airbnb for 20 euros per person per night in the neighbourhoods I’ll feature below. A more lavish dinner in a restaurant would cost 20 euros per person for a tapas treat and a glass of Sangria. You can buy pastries for breakfast for 2-4 euros at the Miremont Pastries shop. The water is safe to drink, so you don’t have to spend money on it.
Moreover, the tourist train between the places that leave Grande Plage costs 7 euros, and there are several public beaches in Biarritz for which you do not need to pay an entrance fee. Some of the most popular are Grande Plage, Plage Miramar and Plage Marrabela.
Wondering where to stay in Biarritz?
City Center
Staying in the centre means you won’t have to spend on transportation. You’ll be close to plenty of attractions you can explore for free, and you also can try the food at reasonable prices. I recommend visiting Le Comptoir du Foie Gras, where Chef Albert will prepare the most specific Basque Foie Gras speciality.
If you want to cook your own food, choose an AirBnB accommodation with an equipped kitchen, and buy groceries at the budget-friendly Carrefour and Lidl supermarkets Also, visit Les Halles de Biarritz, a local covered market offering reasonably priced delicacies.
Port Vieux
Here, you can see many free or low-cost attractions such as Rochr de la Vierge or Rock of the Virgin, a strange-shaped rock that has stood for decades as a symbol of the city. Locals also offer free walking tours.
