The fourth largest Greek Island and one of the most popular tourist destinations is the island of Rhodes. It is at the same time the capital of the Dodecanese Islands and a place with a very long and rich history.

The natural beauty of Rhodes is the main aspect that attracts tourists who are eager to see beautiful beaches surrounded by fragrant pinewoods, modern villages close to the coastal towns and archeological sites, and most of all – to be impressed by the medieval monuments set in cosmopolitan resorts.

Rhodes impresses with its historical face, because of its turbulent past built up by every emperor’s mark left behind.

A trip to Rhodes is not only a holiday but also a trip through time and history. Interestingly enough, even the Knights of St. John had ruled the island.

But, first things first:

Here is the question: Where to stay in Rhodes for the first time?

The answer is simple: Rhodes Town (Old Town)

The Old Town of Rhodes is a fortified medieval town. Its cobblestone streets and impressive towers, churches, and fountains enrich every single spot of it. With that, the best way to explore this ancient town is by walking through it!

The culture and history intertwine and you will enjoy the view, as much as you will enjoy lots of shops, restaurants, and breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea. Finally, the historical landmarks are built in medieval architectural style which will impress you.

Some of the areas include:

  • Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes
  • Street of the Knights (Ippoton Street)
  • Archeological Museum
  • Clock Tower

Why do we recommend these areas?

The Palace of the Grand Master in Rhodes, also called the Kastello, is a medieval castle in the Old Town. It is enormous in size and has 128 rooms, but only 24 are open to visit. Inside, the old furniture is combined with multi-coloured marble, carpets, sculptures, and oriental vases.

The Street of the Knights is a historic location. This almost 600-metre-long road has been renovated. Walking through it is like turning back in time since everything is authentic and you will end up at the Palace. In Greek, this street is called “Ippoton Odos”.

The Archeological Museum is a medieval building. The most interesting part for you might be the museum courtyard, where mosaic floors from the Hellenistic villas are exhibited.

The Clock Tower, the highest point of the Old Town, is the most impressive view seen in Rhodes. It is located in one of the tourist streets named Orfeos. The clock is still counting time. There is a very steep wooden staircase that will lead you to the top where you will find several small knee-high windows.

Here’s a full map for you to understand the different areas.

Please note: those might not be the exact names of the districts, neither its absolute borders. I just tried to simplify this information.
