Andorra - Where to Stay for first time travelers

Where to Stay in Andorra for a first time visit? An insider’s guide 2024

Have you heard of Andorra? Or maybe it’s already on your bucket list? Do you know what the official language is? Perhaps the most delicious speciality you can try there? Suppose you answered at least one of the questions correctly. In that case, I congratulate you- you’ve come across the right place. In today’s article, I’m going to help you find where to stay in Andorra and tell you some interesting information that will make you want to visit this place soon!

Andorra is the sixth smallest nation in Europe and one of the smallest countries in Europe. Still, it is not part of the European Union. Located on the slopes of the Pyrenees Mountains between France and Spain, it covers only 468 square kilometres.

If you are a passionate shopaholic, you will love to hear that Andorra is a tax-free dream and offers up to 20% off on clothes, alcohol, perfumes, and cigarettes. And yes, let me not forget to answer your last question: Catalan is the language spoken here. Still, many of the locals also speak French, Spanish and English, so you shouldn’t have trouble communicating.

Question: Where to stay in Andorra for a first-time visit?

This principality is divided into 7 central parishes. Whichever you stay in, you will find excellent ski resorts and picturesque nature. What may not work in your favour is the fact that Andorra does not have an airport, so you should look for the nearest airport in Barcelona, Spain or Toulouse in France. Then, take a train or rent a car- you’ll arrive in Andorra in about 3 hours.

Another useful thing to know is that you don’t need a visa to enter the country; you can stay for 90 days. All parishes are absolutely safe and offer accommodation options for every wallet. If you come in winter, you’ll experience one of the best ski destinations in Europe.

We know that different types of people require different advice on travel accommodations. This guide includes the best areas for

  • the first time visitor
  • Families
  • Couples
  • Luxury & Design
  • Solo-Traveler
  • on a budget

But, first things first:

Here is the question: Where to stay in Andorra for a first-time visit?

The answer is simple: Andorra la Vella

This is the capital and the highest capital city in Europe. The atmosphere is lively, and the city has many restaurants and shops you can explore. If you come by car, don’t worry, there are enough parking spaces. Otherwise, one-third of the entire population of Andorra is located here. Despite this fact, the city is quiet with cobblestone streets, a tranquil environment and a relaxing pace of life.

So, what to visit?

  • Casa de la Vall
  • Caldea Spa
  • Andorra Shopping Area
  • Sant Esteve Church

Why do we recommend these areas?

Once you decide where to stay in Andorra, it’s time to discover the surroundings. The first thing that catches your eye is Casa de la Vall, a house from the valley with an attractive Catalan style, which has adorned the surroundings since the 16th century.

And if you look up, there’s no way you’ll miss the 18-story glass pyramid-shaped building. In there is the best Caldea Spa that offers relaxation and an unforgettable wellness experience.

As I mentioned, Andorra is a low-tax haven, so you will feel free to shop like never before. Fast Avenida Carlemany and Meritxell are the best places to indulge in some shopping.

Last but not least, Sant Esteve Church is one of the 40 churches in the entire region with Romanesque features.

Here’s a full map for you to understand the different areas.

Please note: those might not be the exact names of the districts, neither its absolute borders. I just tried to simplify this information.

1.1 Families

Looking for the nicest places to stay in Andorra? The country is a unique mix of French and Spanish energy translated into one of the best ski resorts suitable for beginners and children. When it comes to food, this place is an excellent example of Pyrenees gastronomy in beautiful wooden farm-like accommodation. Although many tourists travel there, Andorra doesn’t feel crowded, even at the popular ski resorts.

Arinsal

This is a very charming village, part of La Massana. So, what makes this place ideal to visit with your children? In both summer and winter, there are plenty of activities for every family member. In winter, you will ski, and in summer, you can enjoy tobogganing and zip-line experience. And if you come during Christmas, take advantage of the Christmas village and prepare for bigger crowds than usual.

Soldeu

Sodeu is a whole-family snow hotspot. The small compact village is excellent for winter fun and offers many 4-star and 5-star hotels. Without a doubt, some of the best places to stay in Andorra are located here!

Handpicked accommodations for families

Hotel Princesa Parc, Arinsal

Hotel Princesa Parc has a superb location with a valley view. It offers an outdoor pool, an extensive spa with a hammam and 2 saunas as additional amenities. Buffet restaurants serve breakfast in an international style, and you can pay extra for lunch and dinner in the same manner. I recommend the family rooms which have 2 single beds and 1 double bed in the other bedroom.

Hotel Himàlaia Soldeu, Soldeu

Looking for where to stay in Andorra? Hotel Himàlaia Soldeu is an excellent hotel only 50 metres from the Soldeu Cable Car.  1.2 Couples

The influence of romantic France and dynamic Spain is translated into the charm of Andorra, which invites you to spend your romantic getaway here. Whether you’ll try skiing or go for a challenging summer hike, it’s up to you. You can find accommodation in one of Europe’s most charming boutique hotels that offer an intimate and warm atmosphere. Although it is a popular spot, I recommend visiting Viewpoint Roc del Quer

Soldeu

The village is perfect for a couple’s romantic weekend or longer stay. Sodeu offers luxurious amenities, great relaxing retreats and apres-ski bars. The smaller size concept will captivate you with a more personal and relaxed experience.

Ordino

The northernmost parish is also known as the lungs of Andorra because 33% of the area belongs to the forest. Otherwise, it consists of 8 smaller towns, all hiding a local rural tradition. If you come in the first week of July, you will enjoy the Feast of Roses, where all the men go to the fields, pluck the excess roses, and distribute them to the women around town.

And now, let’s discover where to stay in Andorra!

Handpicked accommodations for couples

1.3 Luxury traveler

Welcome to the country in the mountains; it’s time to explore the best places to stay in Andorra. Although it is a microstate, it still offers visit-worthy locations. If you want to see what luxury used to look like, buy a ticket to the Perfume Museum of Andorra.

One night in a luxury hotel would cost you around 150 euros, with additional wellness and spa retreats and excellent options for fine dining within the hotel or nearby. Visit Restava Borda Estevet in Camillo, which offers traditional food.

Another option is La Formatgeria de l’Artell in the centre of Adora la Villa, which will surprise you with a beautiful artisan cheese selection. And finally, la Borda Pairal in Ordino is in a farmhouse style with homemade farm products.

Escaldes-Engordany

Experience the splendour of Escaldes Fortress and stay in the surroundings of some of the luxury hotels. Apart from the comfort of hotels and special wooden farm-like accommodations, the Roman Thermal Bath is a must-visit.

Soldeu

Looking for where to stay in Andorra? A small compact village in Canillo parish offers world-class skiing, apres ski and fine dining experiences. In summer, you can also enjoy the excellently equipped golf courses.

Handpicked accommodations for the luxury traveler

1.4 Design-lovers

Have you seen the Andorra sign along Avenida Carlemany on Instagram? Like many other hidden gems in the capital, this designer spot is also interesting for a great photo. And what would you say about the National Automobile Museum in Encamp, so vintage cars from the 19th century? Design must-see spot is Carelmany fashion street and beautiful Romanesque architecture.

Escaldes-Engordany

Before writing this text, I thought about what to single out from Escaldes. For lovers of aesthetics and design details, I will mention Claustrophobia, an escape room that is decorated quite interestingly.

Andorra la Vella (City Center)

In the city’s centre, you can find many interesting handmade crafts and stands with artisan food. The most exciting point in the centre is the sculpture made by Dali called The Nobility of Time; it has the shape of a melting clock and captures the significance of time.

And now, let’s discover the nicest places to stay in Andorra!

Handpicked accommodations for the design lover

1.5 Groups

If you are interested in seeing as many museums, shopping centres or cultural events as possible, come from July to September. The country offers you a wide range of accommodation, especially if you’re a group looking for where to stay in Andorra.

As a highlight, the accessibility of the entire region and the grandeur of the Grandvalira and Vallnord ski resorts is something I believe you’ll enjoy the most. And if you want your party to continue into the night, Andorra’s nightlife will not disappoint.

Andorra la Vella (City Center)

The city centre is the best place to accommodate groups. Old-town charm and multilingual culture allow travellers to learn much about local culture and customs. Besides that, you have duty-free shops just a 10-minute drive away.

La Massana

The literal translation means a variety of apples, and that’s enough to tell you about the diversity of the place. Otherwise, La Massana is a sleepy parish cosily tucked away in the Pyrenees. It is great for tourists because it offers excellent Catalan cuisine with a unique French flair. Visit the colourful flower market in the centre of Andoflora and enjoy the smells of many fruits and flowers.

Handpicked accommodations for groups

Barri Antic Hostel & Pub, Andorra la Vella

Being one of the most convenient places to stay in Andorra, Barri Antic Hostel & Pub is located near the bus station and city centre. It has friendly staff and offers free WIFI. There is a shared kitchen, including an oven, microwave and toaster.

How do the locals here manage to reach 82 years of average age? Pack your suitcase and come find out. Do not hesitate for a moment, even if you are travelling alone; Andorra is a territory with a low crime rate, high social atmosphere, and easy to navigate.

And no matter what preferences you have for food, Catalan food is sure to amaze you. No matter when you decide to come, summer or winter, you will never be bored. Just research beforehand which group tours or activities you can join before you decide where to stay in Andorra.

Andorra la Vella (City Center)

An excellent base with easy access and undisturbed peace. This part is a commercial centre located only 3 hours from the nearest airport.

1.7 Nightlife Traveler

Andorra is known for its active nightlife, so some clubs stay open until 5 am on weekends. If you come here, make sure to attend the annual jazz festival. I recommend Cafe del Mar Andorra, a venue inspired by Ibiza that offers chill-out music.

Andorra la Vella (City Center)

Here, you can find spa complexes with many night parties. I recommend The Village – the most popular multiple dance floor music venue.

Pas de la Casa

This place is right on the border and one of the best ski resorts, but it will satisfy you even when the ski slopes close at night. At night, it turns into a nightclub hotspot, and my favourite is Havana Club, which has excellent Latin music.

Hotel de l’Isard is located in a traditional stone building and offers spacious, clean rooms with TV, minibar and central heating. All rooms have a practical design and natural light. The shared lounge area has an open fireplace, and the famous Caldea Spa is just a 10-minute walk from the hotel.

1.8 For the Budget Traveler

Can you find where to stay in Andorra even if you’re travelling on a budget? Yes, of course! You don’t need a visa, so in the beginning, you can save something and find accommodation through Booking or Airbnb. If you fly from Barcelona, a one-way ticket will cost you 34 euros, and a night in a hotel from 45-65 euros.

The food is not expensive, and you can eat in the local restaurants. A delicious speciality you will spend little money on is Еscudilla, a vegetable and meat stew made the Andorran way. You can also cook it yourself in the small kitchen many accommodations offer. If you want to save, visit many free attractions in spring or autumn.

Andorra la Vella (City Center)

Explore the Old Quarter or Barri Antic without spending a penny, not even on transportation, because they are close to you.

La Massana

Everything is within walking distance here; even budget-friendly pulsing nightclubs promise vibrant nightlife. Arinsal is the real hotspot. Also, you can find a small park for a picnic or local dining options here.

Handpicked accommodations for budget traveler

Centro Historico, Andorra la Vella
