Beach Districts in Barcelona
In the earlier part of the guide, we have already tackled about four beach districts in Barcelona. Particularly, these were:
- Barceloneta (in red)
- La Vila Olimpica (in light purple)
- Poble Nou (in blue)
- Diagonal mar y Front Maritim del Poble Nou (in purple)
(please open the left sidebar. Here you can activate the different layers. It will help you to only see the districts.)
Barceloneta (Romantic and narrow)
Located in the former fishermen town and now one of the most famous neighborhoods in Barcelona is Barceloneta.
However, behind its high demand and best-loved beaches is a classic history of fishermen that lived in pretty rough conditions.
Today, still having the charm of the old town, it is now filled with some of the best seafood restaurants in the city
Highlights of Barceloneta:
- Most renowned and most visited beaches
- Museu d’Història de Catalunya (Barcelona’s clock tower)
- Cable cars to Miramar gardens
- Maremagnum shopping center
- Barcelona Aquarium
Poble Nou (New Town)
Poble Nou was a former industrial district. From old factories and warehouses to elegant buildings and cafes, truly it is now a dynamic combination of the old and new.
Today, I love to come here for the coolest hipster cafés, nightlife as well as my favorite brunch Place Can Dende.
Highlights of Poblenou:
- Barcelona’s Design Hub
- Encants Vells (Barcelona’s most ancient flea market)
- Rambla Poblenou
- Poblenou Cemetery
- Glòries Shopping Center
Villa Olimpica
Villa Olímpica, from its name itself, was originally built to house the athletes for the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games.
Later on, the neighborhood was turned into one of the city’s residential district with still a touch of the industrial market in the area.
Today, Villa Olimpica is now home to the main campus of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona’s third-largest university) and one of the most interesting buildings of UPF library (housed in Dipòsit de Les Aigües).
Highlights in Villa Olimpica:
- Torre Mapfre
- Frank Gehry’s Fish (a giant goldfish overlooking the sea)
- Platja de Nova Icària
- Urban Marina of Port Olimpic (site of the sailing events during the Olympic Games)
Packing List
There are a few things we recommend for your packing list in Barcelona. Sun cream and a sun umbrella should be on your bag if you wanna spend some time on the beach.
Sun block is important even when you are not going planning to chill only at the beach.
To make things easier, don’t forget to bring:
The standard voltage in Spain is 230 V and the frequency is 50 Hz. You can use your electric appliances in Spain. if the standard voltage in your country is in between 220 – 240 V. The easiest way to be sure you will be able to plug all your electronics and charge them is to have a travel plug adapter. That way, no matter where you travel, make sure you carry one.
When going to the beach, a beach towel or sarong is a must. I personally prefer a sarong due to its lightness. You can also convert your sarong into a scarf, a skirt…
Barcelona is safe but there are many thieves around the city, even on the beach. Most of them concentrate in the Barceloneta beach, which is the most famous one in the city. Nevertheless, please pay attention to your belongings and never go on the water leaving your stuff unattended. Be sure one of the group stay with the belongings. If traveling alone, ask to other travelers or locals to have a look at your belongings.
We know it is obvious, but many people forget this important item! Bring a sun cream with you, in case you forget it, many supermarkets around the city will sell you sun cream. At least but +30 Block sun cream.
For those willing to connect with locals and have conversations, a conversation guide in Spanish or Catalan will be useful. In Barcelona, you will hear Spanish and Catalan. If you already know Spanish and you think you don’t understand that accent might be because it is Catalan… Worry not! If you ask locals for indications in Spanish they will answer you in Spanish. Most people are bilingual.
Young generations learn English at school, so if you don’t want to practice Spanish just ask young people or people working in bars/ restaurants…
Nowadays, we use our cell phones for everything: communicate through Whatsapp or calls, take photos, use the GPS… Therefore, a portable charger will give you independence to use your cell phone as much as you want ant still have battery.
Optional but always useful:
Best way ever to pack a suitcase with no doubt… Packing cubes help you organize your clothes as well as maintain the dirty and clean clothes separate to each other.
Take your good camera and make your holidays memorable! Photos are the best way to be able to relive your holiday experiences again and again…
You will find many drinkable fountains around the city, however, you won’t see many locals using them. Why? Might you wonder… Well, many dogs drink from those fountains, which makes it not appealing to many people, as some of the animals lick the faucet.
For those sensible to the light… I always recommend to bring a sleeping mask. Actually, it is also useful for the plane.
Safety tips for the beach
Barcelona is definitely safe, though there are a lot of pickpockets.
You don’t have to worry about your physical safety (violent crime is rare), but many a visitor has had their wallet or cell phone disappear in Barcelona. Especially distracted tourists are a popular target.
The main attractions are the “usual” place to take special care of your belongings. Including Barcelona beach!
Here are some tips for making sure you have a nice day at the beach:
- Only take the essentials out with you.
- Never leave your belongings unattended – That includes leaving your bag on the towel while going into the water!

- In general, place your towel near other tourists and/ or locals
