Are you ready to learn something about Zermatt before visiting it? This small village is home to Matterhorn Mountain, famous for appearing in the Toblerone chocolate packaging. I can confirm that the Matterhorn is one of the most recognizable peaks in the whole world. Imagine enjoying this mountain idyll, where you can have the best relaxing vacation. By that, we mean without the noise of petrol cars, as Zermatt is a village with only electric vehicles that can move at a particular time and along a specific path. Therefore, you must have thought that getting here would be a problem.
The solution is simple, and it is located in the nearby town of Tasch, where you can leave your car and take the train to one of the most beautiful ski trails in Switzerland. Also, Zermatt is covered in snow all year round, so you can ski here in summer.
Furthermore, it is the birthplace of Alpine tourism and has Europe’s highest car cable station, 3883-meter-high. Apart from skiing, there are also beautiful hiking trails, and I can still smell the traditional Swiss cuisine. I can’t get it out of my head, from the warmest Swiss traditional bread with toppings and cheese to the scrumptious chocolate that comes great after skiing.
Question: Where to stay in Zermatt for a first-time visit?
If you are in Switzerland for the first time, I recommend spending at least one week in Zermatt. The best months to visit are from July to October, after which the standard winter crowds begin.
If you are looking for advice on where to stay in Zermatt, I would initially advise you to choose according to hotel and accommodation preferences, rather than location, because the village is relatively compact and almost all Zermatt hotels are 15-20 minutes from the centre and a maximum of 700 metres from the nearest ski lift.
Even if you are looking for a budget stay in Zermatt, you can consider the nearby town of Tasch. We know that different types of people require different advice on travel accommodations. This guide includes the best areas for
- the first time visitor
- Families
- Couples
- Luxury & Design
- Solo-Traveler
- on a budget

But, first things first:
Here is the question: Where to stay in Zermatt for a first-time visit?
The answer is simple: Tourists or travellers have no better chance to get to know the city than to visit the busiest and the world’s most exclusive shopping centres in the Bahnhofstrasse Area in Zurich.
Bahnhofstrasse is the main shopping street. Located near the central train station, it is the most significant place and the most recognizable first and last station for every tourist. Downtown Street is more upscale than Bahnhofstrasse; this part also offers the best of Zermatt, such as exciting fashion brand stores, restaurants, and cafes.
And here is a travel checklist for Zermatt. Some of these areas include:
- Zermatt Railway Station
- Restaurants and Cafés
- Shopping
- Matterhorn Museum
Why do we recommend these areas?
As I already mentioned, Zermatt Railway Station is an inevitable stop as it is the first area upon arrival. Even the local trains to the nearest picturesque villages depart from here.
Are you familiar with the term “apres-ski?” This term refers to all the activities you have throughout the day. In addition to skiing, this would include a coffee, tea, or rum break and lunch in one of the local or fine-dining Michelin-star restaurants.
There are small trendy stores on the main street with clothes and souvenirs. You should not underestimate the small, sweet culinary tokens; look for them in Migros Supermarket.
Matterhorn Museum was founded in 1865 and bears witness to the history and culture of this place. As part of the museum, there are several smaller galleries and two to three well-preserved historical buildings. The museum entry is free if you have a Swiss Travel Passport.
Here’s a full map for you to understand the different areas.
Please note: those might not be the exact names of the districts, neither its absolute borders. I just tried to simplify this information.

1.1 Families
Apart from St Moritz or Gstaad being one of the most renowned winter destinations in Switzerland, there are many more places worth seeing. Suppose you are looking where to stay in Zermattare with children and family; this might be the place to spend a quality vacation to remember, from beautiful views and delicious food to opportunities for beginners to learn to ski.
Even if you don’t ski, there are plenty of things to keep you busy in the picturesque mountain village, with or without children. A particular advantage of Zermatt accommodations is that getting to the city is relatively straightforward. The best option is to land in Zurich, which is only 3 hours from Zermatt.
Winkelmatten
The southern part of Zermatt hides the most beautiful panoramic views from the comfort of your chosen hotel. Unlike other neighbourhoods, Winkelmatten is quieter and can offer a relaxed family vacation. Furthermore, it is a residential area with beautiful chalets, but you can also find an excellent choice of luxury hotels. Also, the location is in your favour. Even though you are in a more peaceful spot, the centre is within 15 to 20 minutes on foot.
Zermatt Village Center
Make it easy for you and your family to explore and enjoy together. You can also organize tobogganing if you are up for some adventure. If you are wondering where to stay in Zermatt, don’t worry; all hotels are close to you, and many offer family rooms. As a family-oriented restaurant, I will single out Restaurant Du Pont, which also provides a special children’s menu.
Handpicked accommodations for families
Chalet Ulysse, Winkelmatten
Chalet Ulysse is one of the Zermatt top hotels with four bedrooms for eight people or two bedrooms for four guests. All rooms have single beds, but you can get a double bed as well. The accommodation has a spectacular location, 250m from the ski lift and 10 minutes from the centre.
The rooms have a split-level interior and lavish decor, and they offer access to a sauna, outstanding coverage, and a Wi-Fi connection. Finally, don’t forget to immerse yourself in the majestic views from your room’s balcony or terrace.
Monte Rosa Boutique Hotel, Zermatt Village Center
Monte Rosa Boutique Hotel is a superb five-star hotel, justified by the beautiful spa and two swimming pools, the bar with top cocktails, the refined restaurant and the spacious large suites. You can also enjoy a family room with a baby.
This Zermatt accommodation represents a perfect blend of 150-year-old buildings and up-to-date luxury. For the best experience, I recommend Whymper or Monte Rosa Suites.
1.2 Couples
Even if you are not into skiing or have only come for one day to Zermatt, you have enough activities that include strolls, museum visits, an excellent Swiss traditional lunch or simple relaxation in the wellness centres with a beautiful view of the mountain.
If you are a dynamic and sporty couple and love hiking, imagine 400km of hiking trails waiting for you. I recommend the Schaeferstube, a beautiful restaurant where you can take a break in the middle of the path.
Winkelmatten
Winkelmatten is located above the centre and offers adventure and excellent wellness resorts. Just a step away from nature, the neighbourhood will prepare you for a romantic and memorable getaway in the Swiss Alps.
Zermatt Village Center
Does your partner like surprises and even more beautiful panoramic views? Well, take them to the Omnia Hotel view deck. Also, in the heart of Zermatt, a lovely 5-star hotel, Mont Cervin Palace, is open to guests from outside for coffee or lunch and will attract you with the perfect blend of luxury and romance.

Hotel Tannenhof, Zermatt Village Center
Hotel Tannenhof is a three-star hotel featuring a garden, terrace, high-rated bar, and restaurant offering Italian and Mediterranean food and excellent pizza. If I have to point out something as the best feature, it is the location, just 450 m from the ski lift.
Furthermore, the reception offers a ski pass sell point. However, if you are still unsure where to stay in Zermatt, I suggest a Deluxe Double Room with a balcony.
1.3 Luxury traveler
Zermatt is one of the most charming mountain resort towns, whether about accommodation or fine dining restaurants. For luxury lodging, I’ve found some of the Zermatt top hotels, designed for travellers who enjoy the finer things in life.

Winkelmatten has the most beautiful private chalets with private spas, lavish suites, personalized service, and gourmet dining, such as Brasserie Uno, Alpine Gour Prato Borni, The Omnia Hotel, and Capri.

Here, you will learn about history, culture and architecture. Also, Swiss cuisine is not to be missed, especially their breakfast. Reserve a table at Bistro Fuchs and enjoy every bite and the masterfully designed interior.
Winkelmatten
Since I have already told you enough about Winkelmatten, it is time to describe one of the delightful restaurants that offers creative dishes and a pleasant atmosphere in a stylish interior. For modern food creations, go to Aroleid Wood Restaurant or Brasserie 1809.
If you want to enjoy the beautiful ornate facade and the same view, Omnia Hotel is waiting for you. Finally, check out the modern interior at Cervo Mountain Resort, which offers a great special menu.

Every room has a balcony, and some have a patio. The location couldn’t be more central – 300 metres from the station. Make sure to catch Joseph’s Bar, which is filled with timeless piano melodies.
